Do we need to practice headstands in our yoga classes in 2026?

Other ways to invert

Most definitely not, no headstands or shoulder stands in the classes I teach.

There are many reasons why I don't teach these postures in group classes.

Bbbut they're good for you

Yes, I know the importance of inversions and why yogis practice BUT not everyone is built to headstand.

As for shoulder stands, I see so many practiced that put considerable stress on the neck joint - all the messages to and from your brain travel through that junction, why risk damaging it?

Oops

I'm not saying one incorrectly practiced head/shoulder stand will damage you for life, but repeated incorrect practice will certainly impact your health.

So what do you teach❓

In my classes I focus more on function than form.

Perfect, correctly aligned poses are a very Iyengar style of teaching.

That is not what we do in our Monday night classes at the hall or online.

I do use techniques that I learnt in my many years with two brilliant Iyengar teachers - hence the use of blocks, belts and bolsters.

However, I use the adaptations to help people get into an adapted, supported posture.

This way you learn how the pose should feel, and you get to experience the benefits without the strain or risk of injury.

If you want to learn headstand, my group classes are not for you.

One day maybe when I have space for another 1-2-1 student, then I will teach you, but not right now.

Ok, so what do we do in class?

If you join a class at the hall or via Zoom, you will notice we tend to follow this format.

Savasana - lying on the floor (some people choose to sit in chairs)
Settle and switch off - I guide you to let go of the outside world and spend time bringing your conscious awareness into your physical body. We notice how we feel physically, mentally, emotionally.
Breath awareness, once settled, you bring attention to the breath and introduce a technique to help calm your body and mind. This is especially effective in calming your nervous system.
Gentle postures combined with breath - mixture of supine, standing, seated postures. Again, some choose to practice in a chair throughout the whole session.
Guided relaxation

That is it

That is a pretty standard class - oh, except last Monday of each month we do YiNidra, more on that here

The aim of all the classes is to bring you to an awareness and experience of your inner stillness, to connect you with your inner haven of peace that is within you always.

It just tends to get drowned out in the noise of the world.
