How to sit for Meditation

Grab a chair, give me the next 5 minutes and I will get you started meditating. No crossed legs, no chants, just you and a chair is all you need

How to sit for Meditation
My meditation chair

In the REAL meditation method we sit on a chair.

Yes, you could sit cross legged on the floor, kneel on a meditation stool, sit on a Zafu/blanket or use any other type of meditation aid.

BUT unless lotus posture comes naturally to you, we prefer to make this accessible for everyone, so to keep it real for everyday, we use a chair.

Any chair will do (I have the "Any dream will do" singing in my head as I type that)

Preferably a chair without arms

This helps with the position we need for our hands.

Sit away from the back of the chair
With an upright spine
Sat ready to start meditation
Feet flat on the floor

Feet should be flat on the floor.

If necessary place a yoga block/folded blanket under your feet, so there is no strain maintaining your posture.

Hands resting on thighs

Rest the back of your hands at the juncture of your thighs and abdomen.

Hands resting at juncture of thighs and abdomen

That is it

All you need to get started meditating is a chair to sit on.

It really is that simple

Lift your chest, draw your shoulders back and let your shoulder blades melt down towards your waist.

Sit upright with a relaxed spine.

and off you go...

Ah, yeah, this is where we often come unstuck

Don't worry, in the weeks to come we will look at different elements of the technique that I use every day.

The REAL method that helps to keep me connected with my inner haven of peace.

Plus you can always join us at the meditation clinic on zoom.

The clinic is there for you to get any questions answered and as a space for us to sit and practice together.

In the meantime, here is a 3 minute practice from a recent meditation clinic to get you started.

Sit on your chair and have a listen
